Weekend News

Last night at the Tornado game was fun. After a year out of action, it felt good to be back in the broadcast booth, as I called two periods of color with Alex Kyrias (thanks, Cheeks). The Tornado lost 3-2 in OT to Wichita Falls. I said this last night on air, and I'll say it again here... the Tornado have lost their swagger. Yes, they are champions until dethroned, but it's clear this is the best opportunity anyone has to do just that. It was also great (not to mention unexpected, for both of us) to see Santa Fe coach Scott Langer at the game. We had a good chat, and it's clear to me he's ready to put the troubles of this week behind him and move forward with the rest of the season.

The other game of interest last night was Phoenix at Tucson. This battle for WSHL supremacy (no offence to El Paso) was a back-and-forth affair all night, with Tucson evening the season series with a 5-4 win.

In other news:

Early word is that Edmonton's new WHL team will be known as the Oil Kings. The press conference is today, so I'm expecting something to be posted on their website at some point.

UPDATE: Yup, it's Oil Kings. Here's the logo...
