Weekend News

The Tier III verdict is in... I'll be posting something on it later today...

Is the Central Hockey League serious about entering the USHL's footprint with a team in rural northern Iowa? At least this proposed new building in Iowa is more than the 15 minutes separating the arena going up in Allen from the Texas Tornado's Deja Blue Arena. But to me the question is: since we know that the CHL's parent company is willing to build arenas clearly outside the CHL footprint that would house non-CHL hockey teams (Wenatchee), would they be willing to partner with the USHL to build smaller venues (3,800-4,500 seats)? Readers are reminded that Global's core business is not hockey, but arena construction...

Swift Current turns first profit in four years. Some interesting pieces of information here. Payments from the WHL, presumably from league sponsorships, rose from $22,500 in 2005 to $65,025 in 2006 to $328,767 in 2007. The Broncos received $190,477 as a result of the awarding of a franchise to Edmonton. The Broncos bottom line also increased thanks to additional NHL income - their share of the approximately $6M delivered annually to CHL teams for player development. After receiving no funds during the strike year of 2005, the Broncos received $75,203 in 2006 to $84,396 in 2007....

Spirit Lake is a fine place in the summer but most folks that live there are only there for those months the rest of the year (hockey season) i don't think a pro team would fly.

why is Swift Current getting money from the new teams? Is that what they do? If I have a new team my entry fee goes to other teams and not the league? Confused

The other teams are the league. No different then an NHL teams getting a piece of an expansion fee.
