BirthUpdate

I traded emails with someone in the USHL today. The reason for the policy removing DOBs from Pointstreak is to help prevent identity theft. It's a noble reason, but I believe the concern is somewhat misplaced and the solution to be overkill. I pointed out that under FERPA regulations most universities consider birthdates to be directory information (and thus releasable without prior consent), and that the policy was undermined by 1) teams posting DOBs on their own website rosters and 2) the DOBs remaining in Pointstreak from previous seasons of data. The official was unaware of any of this and will bring it up. He is also going to pass along my suggestion to include just the birth year. That way scouts can get the info they need, while the players stay protected. We'll have to wait and see what happens next, but I'm optimistic things will be tweaked appropriately.

In other news, Lincoln's leading scorer Jared Brown committed to Northern Michigan this week. I'm glad to see Brownie make it to D1, as we know each other from our time with the Lone Star Cavalry (that seems like an eternity ago). Brownie moved with the team to Santa Fe before moving on to Lincoln last season. Also playing for Northern are Brown's former Cavalry/Roadrunner teammates Tim Hartung and Brant Marple.

Under FERPA, the schools must give prior notice that they will release such "directory information" and permit the student an opportunity to opt out.

If you want to know a junior player's birth date, you can always start at http://members.aol.com/cheisenber/Recruit07.htm

This is true, and I pointed it out to my contact.

The Pointstreak system does not allow soley the birthyear or even the month and year of birth to be posted. It's a system flaw that will require a programming update, which may be over a year away.

Considering there doesn't appear to be any edit checking in the system, based on the number of players listed with 1/01/1111 birthdays, why not enter generic month/days, with actual birthyears. Either plug in 1/1 or 0/0 or 9/99, plus the actual year.

Al Murdoch is crooked as a question mark? Anyone remember Iowa State giving up their National Championship thanks to a host of former pros on their team? As for being up there with NCAA, no way. But, it is legit hockey, Murdoch just needs to follow the "rules."
