I've got multiple reports out of San Angelo that Mark Adams has filed an application to bring an NAHL team to San Angelo. Adams was (and technically still is) the owner of the CHL Lubbock Cotton Kings. I'm also hearing that the "it's just high school hockey" naysayers are chirping. My response would be to point to Pat Maroon. The current London Knight is 6th in the OHL in scoring, played the last two seasons in the NAHL for the Bandits, just signed a contract with the Philadelphia Flyers, and in all likelihood will see NHL action before the season is out. How many players were in the Central Hockey League one season and the NHL the next? I'll tell you - ZERO. I've said this before and I'll say it again... NAHL players are on their way up, CHL players are on the way down. Which would you rather watch, San Angelo? Rangers coach Peter DeBoer gets 500th win vs. Erie... John Zeiler was in the CHL one year and the NHL the next.
seems that San Angelo has the same mindset as Indianapolis after they lost their low level pro team. They see USHL/NAHL as just glorified HS and most won't support it because they can't go drink with the players afterwards.
Some will support it though, and props to those people.
The socalled "high school hockey" is much more preferable than the "Clown Hockey League" shennanigans we've seen in the past in Topeka. Far better product on the ice, with much better motivated players.
I can't speak to the CHL, but I can say that the NAHL is on the way up. Quality of play and talent have increased each of the past two seasons, and from what I have seen so far this season the trend is continuing. Before last season Maroon could have gone just about anywhere he wanted, but he chose to stay in the NAHL.
And for the naysayers in San Angelo, I offer two suggestions: 1) Check out some NAHL games on B2 Networks, particularly those of South Division teams (since that would be the division a San Angelo team would join). 2) Listen to flameseh? and get some views from other folks in Topeka. They seem to be plenty happy with having the Road Runners (as well they should be) as opposed to a CHL team.
