Saturday News

A few folks have asked me about the new fundraising strategy of the WSHL Tulsa Rampage. If you go over to their website you'll see in the right margin where you can donate and "sponsor" a player. It's no surprise to me that teams are taking advantage of USA Hockey's (correctly) liberalized interpretation of the NCAA regs regarding scholarships (sponsorships, scholarships --> to-MAY-to, to-mah-to). But I have to admit I did get a small chuckle out of the fact the first team to exploit the philosophical change is the team that sold parents less than a year ago that I didn't know what I was talking about regarding the matter.

Egads!!! Someone called someone else a derogatory name in an OHL game! Whatever shall we do? Yup, that's right, the OHL suspended a kid five whole games for calling someone a "no-name Euro." It's too bad Oklahoma State doesn't have a hockey team for which the offended kid could play, cause we all know Mike Gundy wouldn't allow a mother (of children) to hear her son called such a horrible horrible thing... Saturday News

Not to start on a down note, but I'd like to extend my deepest condolences to the Nicolaou family here in Texas on the loss of a great hockey mom, Marylin. Thoughts and prayers are with you all.

With a lot of new readers to start the season, I thought I'd offer a few reminders. First off, you don't need to constantly come back to this site to see if I've posted anything new, because all posts are also sent via email. If you look over to the right you'll see a link: "Get Blog Posts Via Email". This takes you to the email list I use to distribute posts. The list does not spam - you will only receive blog posts. The membership list is kept from other members, so only you inbox will know. I've also updated the standings links (over on the right) for the new season.

Monday News

Quick reminder that the Helena Bighorns have found themselves short a broadcaster when their previous one moved up last week to the Amarillo Gorillas of the CHL. Anyone interested in calling their games (and maybe doing a little selling) should contact Mike Butters...

I know it's a week later, but some final thoughts on the games played between the QMJHL and the USHL... A major contention the QMJHL-CHL apologists has been their best players, 19 and 20, were at pro camps when the games took place. Has anyone considered that the USHL's best 19 and 20 year-olds were also not in the games because they have moved on to the NCAA? I'm also not sure that enough credit has been given to Omaha (and to a lesser degree Indiana) for their performance despite busing halfway across North America. Yes, the two teams played a scrimmage in Toronto to shake out their bus legs, but this was also the ONLY preseason game these two teams had seen thus far. Rimouski and Quebec, on the other hand, had each already seen six preseason games with which to prepare. Anyway, my point to all this is that at the end of the day, I think the USHL is a lot closer to the CHL than most folks realize or are willing to admit.

My Oklahoma Sooners (ACHA D1 club) released their roster last night... Those of you not from this region will have to bear with me for a moment, but I'm a little fired up about this team. Eleven newcomers join the Sooners this season, including former Texas Tornado defenseman Austin Miller, who has transferred to OU from NCAA D1 Providence, and forward Sean McCauley, who played last season with the Ohio Jr. Blue Jackets of the USHL. Monday News

I'm trying a couple of new things this week. First off, since I've expanded my coverage beyond business to include player news, I spent a fair bit of time expanding the search functions which notify me of news items. Readers should notice a broader spread of teams that get covered, and should expect a more steady stream of posts daily.

The other thing I've done is add a "Send Anonymous Email" link in the upper right margin. For about the last year someone in the NAHL (note to commissioner Mark Frankenfeld: I have no idea who) has been sending me meetings minutes and other "heads up" notifications via the WillSelfDestruct system, and I've received a few other leads already since I've added it. Would-be tipsters should remember, however, that sending me something doesn't automatically mean they'll see it on the blog, especially if it's something anonymous which I can't validate. Do not abuse this privilege, folks...
