St. Catharines rubs new team in the face of neighboring Niagara Falls. Memo to writer, Niagara Falls didn't want the team anyway. Besides, the team is going to be called the Niagara IceDogs, so get ready for a move if/when Niagara Falls decides to embrace the team with a new arena. Elsewhere, some North Bay folks aren't happy the way things have turned out with the IceDogs, and I can't say as I blame them...

Bowkus hired in Wichita Falls

John Bowkus takes over as Wildcats head coach. From what I understand Bowkus makes Tony Curtale look like a saint, so perhaps this classic Bette Davis clip needs to be played before Tornado-Wildcats games next season. Right now I give the edge to Bowkus, so far as I know Curtale has never been investigated by the Texas Rangers...

OHL team eyes Garden City. Title should read: "Potential OHL owner eyes"... At least a local columnist got it right. My question is, if your local writers who usually double as your cheerleaders don't immediately support a new team, why should the fans? Maybe he's concerned for the survival of the local B team. But I just don't get why Burke wants to drop the team in an ancient 3,000 seat barn with no promise of fan support or ever getting a better facility down the road. Just move it to North Bay and be done with it already...

Friday News and Rumors

The NHL invited seven USHL players this week to their draft combine next month. This is an early indication of how many can be expected to be drafted in the first three rounds of the draft, since only about 100 players attend the event. Since there's likely several future draftees who are first attending college, this needs to be considered before anyone tries to make direct comparisons to the CHL. I haven't seen the full player list yet, but it'll be interesting to see how many NCAA USHL alums are on it as well...

Port Colborne Sailors on thin ice...

I'll go ahead and address a couple rumors that have popped up in the last couple of weeks. The first involves renovations to the Texas Tornado's Deja Blue Arena, a story bouncing around the local youth hockey community. There are plans to expand the seating capacity to 5,500. The arena is hosting an indoor football team this summer, and building managers also want to get a piece of the growing Collin County graduation ceremony pie. Also, by boosting capacity to 5,500, the arena will be able to position itself to host concerts. In general, it will go from an oversized ice rink to a full service facility. I have to wonder if the plans are a preemptive strike against International Coliseums Company, who has considered building a similarly sized building in nearby Allen (and probably adding a Central Hockey League team when finished). The area doesn't need two similar sized facilities, so the StarCenter folks are heading ICC off at the pass. The real question everyone seems to be asking is "will the expansion impact the Tornado?" I don't believe so. For one thing, the expansion is not anticipated to impact any of the walls of the the arena - all the new seating will take place within the original footprint. So no, I don't see the Tornado spending a season back in Blue Line.

The other rumor involved the defection of three CHL teams to the NAHL. There appears to be some fire to this smoke, but I don't have a lot of details. There's not a lot of certainty, but it seems that the three teams that would be added to the NAHL's South Division would be the Odessa Jackalopes, Amarillo Gorillas, and the Lubbock Cotton Kings. I have several concerns with such a move. First off, attendance for all three teams have been in decline (that's a big reason why they're looking to cut costs and go juniors), and forced shifts from professional to junior hockey have never gone over well in this part of the country (see Tupelo, Tulsa, and Topeka for examples). Adding a new rival in Wichita Falls will help, but how much is hard to say. In addition, there's a decent chance Lubbock won't have a lease for next season. So while the South Division could use shoring up, at the end of the day we still don't know if it will happen. (insert pithy SWJHL comment here)

And finally... with league seasons winding down, and players hanging up the skates for the summer, here's one goalie who knows what he's doing in the off season...

Yaaaah, that's what I'm talking aboot...

Thursday News

The CHL gave their presentation to Rapid City officials yesterday. There's not a lot of details in the Rapid City Journal article, at least for my taste. Lack of close rivals was brought up - interestingly, presenter Ralph Backstrom represents the closest potential rival, in Fort Collins. The CHL also cited about 70 AHL callups and a handful of NHL players from the CHL. I don't know the actual AHL number, but the NHL number is ten, eight of which weren't in the league as a part of the lockout, and only three of which spent ten or more games in the CHL. In comparison, the USHL is probably close to generating ten NHLers per exiting cohort, be it directly or after passing through the NCAA. The CHL also mentioned that eight teams had AHL and/or NHL affiliations. History has proven that these agreements aren't usually worth the paper they're written on - if they're even on paper. Quite often AA minor league affiliations are nothing more than formalized networking agreements between two coaches who happen to know each other, and are nothing like how affiliations worth in baseball, where organizations have another 80-120 players under contract for development.

More Wednesday News

Just when I thought the news would slow down...

Today is the start of the Battle of the Black Hills, as the Central Hockey League gives their presentation to the civic & community leaders of Rapid City. The USHL's presentation is the 24th.

Speaking of the USHL... Jon Garver appears to have no signs of slowing down, as he's determined the USHL has 16 alumni vying for the Stanley Cup. FYI, that's 10 more than the UHL. Of course, only two of those UHL alums (Chris Kelly and Chris Neil in Ottawa) aren't guys who played in the minors during the NHL lockout. Memo to USHL: look up the CHL numbers when you offer your rebuttal of CHL claims in Rapid City in a couple of weeks...

Springy Blues retain Chris Wyler as their head coach. Eric Ballard has been named assistant coach. Meanwhile, former coach Nick Pollos has landed as head coach of the Chicago Chill AAA Midgets...

Wednesday News

Someone needs to elbow Valencia Vipers boss Larry Bruyere, and remind him that the WSHL has NOT been approved (yet) by USA Hockey to operate as a Tier-3 Junior A league. The WSHL's application is in the bucket just like the AWHL's and any other league's, and in all likelihood they aren't going to get an up or down vote until the meetings this summer. Personally, I think Tier 3 is a joke. If everyone in Jr B is going to apply and be granted T3A status, wouldn't have just been easier to modify the Jr B regs to what would have been the T3A standards? Yes, I know... this ignores the political realities of junior hockey on the East Coast, but this entire scenario is a great example of unintended consequences. Seriously, what is going to be accomplished when you change the label? Considering some of the leagues are organizationally incompetent, this is no better than using social promotion to allow an illiterate kid to advance to the next grade.

The Record out of Kitchener-Waterloo has an editorial that asks why a player's action which in the regular season would result in a 2-game suspension instead in the playoffs generates a $500 fine. The paper goes so far as to call the OHL "bush league"...

Curiously enough, the newspaper is going off on the NHL after an incident where one of their hometown players, Steve Downie, benefited from the discipline policy.

One other interesting tidbit from the editorial - the Kitchener Rangers generated Can$4.14M (US$3.62M) in revenue last season.

Jon Garver of the USHL was a busy boy yesterday. First off, Tuesday is when he puts out the regular weekly release. Release #2 of the day announces that Waterloo GM (and all-around good-guy) Doug Miller will pull double-duty with the additional role as USHL's Director of Corporate Sales and Sponsorships, a position the league has needed filled for at least a couple of years. Next up, Garver reports the USHL has topped the million mark in attendance this season. Garver then pushes out the league's release of the slightly-dated news that Green Bay is hosting next year's Prospects/All Star Game. Finally, Jon cranks out an extended narrative detailing the race for the Anderson Cup. Wow Jon, whatcha gonna do today?

USHL Prez Gino Gasparini was interviewed Monday on an Edmonton sports-radio station, discussing unique the playoff format as well as expansion. You can listen to the interview here.

Tuesday news

The NAHL finally got around to taking the interim off of Mark Frankefeld's Commissioner title last week. He'd been the interim commish since Eric Krukpa was invited to leave a few months into his tenure.

I still haven't decided what to make of this long story on ESPN's website about the Swift Current tragedy 20 years later. I'm not sure Swift Current, which faced the exploits of Graham James on top of the bus tragedy, knows how to feel, either... and maybe that's the story.

Monday News

Here's a newsflash - The Columbian is telling us the Fort Vancouver Pioneers might not be in the NORPAC next season. That's pretty much been a foregone conclusion ever since the final ruling was handed down.

In a semi-related note, Tucson Ice, the WSHL Tilt's home rink last season (well, half of it anyway) is closing after today. The facility has had issues on an off and has not been a particularly strong operator. In addition, the Arizona Attorney General's office has been contacting folks at the rink and who worked with the Tilt and Jon MacWilliams. We'll just have to see if anything comes of it.

The USHL and NAHL are both enjoying Michigan State's NCAA title. The USHL has 15 alumni playing for the Spartans, and the NAHL is claiming 11 alumni on Michigan State's roster. However, it would be nice if they counted players who actually played a game in their league. Steven Mnich may have been rostered with the Texas Tornado, but never played a game for them. In addition Matt Shouneyia is not listed on the Spartans' roster...

The USHL has also released their list of alumni who were NCAA All-Americans this season...

OHA development program to continue on a larger scale...

The Waterloo Record had a editorial piece this weekend promoting the idea of moving the homeless Icedogs to Waterloo. Unfortunately, the article is hiding behind a subscription and I can't tell you much more other than there's some concern the Kitchener Rangers might object to the territorial invasion.

Rapid City Update and 2008 All Star Game

Rapid City is back on the front-burner this morning as construction has resumed on their arena. The real question is who will play there. A civic-minded committee will hear presentations from the CHL on April 11 and from the USHL on April 24.

I'm not sure of the strategy to be used by the USHL to beat-out the CHL in claiming the market. Obviously, both leagues will need to need to incorporate some degree of local ownership. I think it's fairly predictable that the USHL will focus on the development angle, whereas the CHL will concentrate on entertainment. Thing is, "entertainment" in this case isn't quantifiable, and it could be argued the "value" of both leagues is equal. The USHL should be able to do a better job of playing the "community" card by discussing billet housing.

Also, expected today is some form of announcement from the Green Bay Gamblers that they will be hosting the 2008 All Star Game. It may come this evening while the Gamblers play at home against Cedar Rapids. UPDATE: Here is the release...

The St. Louis Bandits' website is claiming 10,252 spectators attended their exhibition game in the Scottrade Center. However, many fans are claiming the turnstile count was closer to 4,000-5,000 butts in the seats. At least when Indiana papers the house for their big games in Conseco, most people actually show up. Still, since the game was an exhibition, Topeka (which seats 7,777) has the potential to break the NAHL's regular season attendance record when hockey returns to the city. Fortunately for the Bandits, I don't think Mark Zeigler has any plays for a follow-up article about attendance inflation...

Get a grip

Well, it was bound to happen. Based on some of the comments, a few of you didn't like my joke for April Fool's Day. I'm not sure if the original objector is referring to the comment about Ron White or the blog post in general. If it's the comment, I didn't write it and don't support it. If it's the post, get a sense of humor and give me a freaking break. I suppose the Edmonton Sun lost all sorts of credibility Sunday for reporting that the Oilers were being relegated to the AHL next season.

Sure, I went fishing Sunday. Thing is, some folks didn't just take the bait, they swallowed the hook - despite the fact I put a link into the end of the post that gave away the punchline. A lot people apparently took the post as fact and stopped reading partway through - shades of Orson Welles and The War of the Worlds. I think the fact so many people (judging by the response Chris Perry and I received) took the post as indisputable fact is a testament to people's faith in what I write.

As for my general credibility, judging by the consistent growth in 1) traffic to my site (March 2007 saw ten times the traffic as March 2006), 2) positive feedback, and 3) requests for my advice, I'd say my credibility is ever on the rise.

New Junior B League

Well, it's taken long enough, but a new league is on the map. The SWJHL will be taking the ice next season as a Junior B league based in Texas and Oklahoma. The league is starting out with eight teams split into two divisions. The West will feature Amarillo, Lubbock, Odessa, and Santa Fe, while the East includes Oklahoma City, North Richland Hills, Houston, and Waco. The man behind the new league is Chris Perry, better known as the GM of the D1 ACHA program at the University of Oklahoma.

I had a chance to interview Chris over the phone Saturday while he was attending the Jr. B Nationals in Grand Rapids. Here was some of our conversation:
MF: First thing's first, this will be a USA Hockey certified league, correct?

CP: Absolutely. We feel that it is a necessary step, and it's a major reason why I am in Grand Rapids. We've filed our paperwork, and I am confident our plan will be approved by the Junior Council this summer.

MF: What is it about this operating model that makes the SWJHL special?

CP: The league is going to be centrally-owned by a group of private investors. We feel that central ownership is going to solve the tuition/scholarship controversy. All player tuition payments will be sent to the league office, then dispersed to the teams. Since the teams are owned by the league, each team's finances will be completely transparent, and there will be no scholarships.

MF: So why Junior B, why now, and why in Texoma?

CP: We felt it was the right time. With a number of current Junior B teams and leagues anticipated to move up to Tier III Junior A, there will be a need to fill that gap.

MF: Do you foresee moving to Tier III A yourselves?

CP: We've talked about it, but would like to get established first. You have to walk before you can run.

MF: Let's talk about these teams, starting with the West. You've got Santa Fe and three CHL markets. What is up out there?

CP: Santa Fe was available and the market is already familiar with junior hockey. We know their support of the Roadrunners wasn't sufficient, but it would be just fine for a Junior B team. Entering the three CHL markets was a strategic risk. All three are near the bottom in attendance. We felt that moving in now would acclimate the markets to junior hockey. In the event the CHL teams move or fold, the remaining fanbase would be more than enough for us, while also being more likely to accept and adopt the junior team.

MF: Sort of like El Paso, only without the hiatus?

CP: More or less.

MF: Would you like to see El Paso in your league?

CP: We've not been in contact with any WSHL teams. We'd like to stick to our operating plan.

MF: Looking at the East... Oklahoma City makes sense for you since you're already in town and have an existing relationship with the Blazers Ice Center. In North Richland Hills, I assume you're going to play in the smaller rink at Blue Line when it reopens. Houston has been long overdue to get junior hockey... but what about Waco?

CP: When the Wizards folded, their ice plant and boards were eventually shipped to Texarkana. We're going to acquire a new portable iceplant and boards for the Heart O' Texas Coliseum. Meanwhile, we are scouting locations for a new permanent one-sheet facility. When it's built we'll just transfer the boards and glass over. To answer the other question, Blue Line's timing could not have been better, and yes we'll play in NHL1, which seats about 800.

MF: Where else would you like to have gone, or are looking at for the future?

CP: We let College Station slip away. We just couldn't get a deal done there in time, and are still talking to them for 2008. With Santa Fe out west we'd like to add Albuquerque. In Texarkana we're exploring building a modest facility similar to what we want to do in Waco. We tried to get into San Angelo, but the lease terms were too high. We're also looking at Springdale, Arkansas.

MF: Joel Carver?

CP: Yes. Rogers is building a 9,000-seat arena and is expected to get a minor league team in 2008. This should jump start youth hockey in Northwest Arkansas and provide an excellent opportunity for us.

MF: Anything else you want to discuss?

CP: We've got three coaches signed. They have total buy-in into our model. Two others are in negotiations, and we're working on the other three. We'll be making some announcements soon.

MF: Is the coaching search why you're in Grand Rapids?

CP: I really can't comment. I don't want our appearance at Nationals to be a distraction for any of the teams. This is their time, not the SWJHL's.
Well, it's an interesting situation to be sure. Chris ducked the WSHL issue, not to mention the coaches, which I found interesting. I know there's been some thought in some leagues to centralize the tuition collection process, but not to the point of centralizing he entire league. Chris would also not discuss the league's investors, wishing to keep that for the league's official unveiling. In any case, it looks like it's an interesting day for junior hockey.
